Active Members
The Board of Directors shall establish qualifications guidelines for the promotion of
Associate Members into Active Membership. The guidelines shall be based on the members'
demonstrated attitude, involvement and responsibility. Modeling skills and personality shall not be
relevant, and a new member shall be advanced to Active Membership as soon as practical.
Active Members shall have the privilege of visiting the Choo-Choo layout (with guests) and of
operating the layout at any time the layout is open to the general public.
Active Members shall have the privilege to purchase and wear articles of clothing that bear the
club's logo and to display the membership badge that includes the club logo.
Active Members may hold office in the club and may participate in the dissolution of the club
as provided in Article 9 of the by-laws.
Active Members may be granted other privileges and honors by the Board of Directors.
The status of ALL Active Members shall be reviewed by the Board of Directors at the
beginning of each fiscal year. Those members who have become inactive, in the opinion of the Board, may
be returned to Associate status. A temporary wavering of the interest shall not be grounds for losing
Active status and members who have made substantial contributions to the club in the past shall not lose
their Active status unless they have significantly limited contact with the club. Active Members who have
been returned to Associate status may continue to wear and display club logos obtained as an Active
Member.
The Board confers Active Membership upon an Associate Member as quickly as they demonstrate an
attitude, involvement, and responsibility in keeping with our ways of doing things.
There is a set of guidelines for qualification into Active Membership. But please don’t become paranoid as
the guidelines are flexible and no records are kept on anyone--the Board operates with memory and general
impressions. The guidelines are as follows:
a) The member displays a mature attitude in and around the fragile modeling environment.
b) The member attends approximately 50% of recent meetings.
c) The member appears for work sessions (about 15 logged hours).
d) The member participates at two recent exhibitions.
e) The member demonstrates a knowledge of club procedures and layout operation.
f) The member demonstrates a responsibility to the club and to the club’s Choo-Choo obligation.
g) The member provides any other significant contribution to the club in lieu of the above.
Note that modeling skills and personality have no bearing on the election. It could take from six months to a
year to show the club that you are committed to the Active Membership role. If you feel that your election
is past due, talk to the Membership Chairman. He’s on your side. Some new members never choose to
become involved, but participation has its rewards. Let your natural enthusiasm take over and you will be
an Active Member before long.
Active Members have certain additional privileges. They are the shareholders of the club and they are
eligible to become Board Members. Active Members are given the combination to the locks at the Choo-
Choo layout and workroom and they can enter and operate the Choo-Choo Layout during any hour that the
Choo-Choo is open to the public. (Board Members may be at the Layout during any hour--day or night.)
Active Members will be awarded the more attractive namebadge and they have the privilege to purchase
clothing with the club logo.
The status of all Active Members is reviewed at the beginning of each fiscal year. Members who have
significantly disassociated themselves from club activities, in the opinion of the Board, will be returned to
Associate Status. However, the Board considers a member’s previous contributions, and realizes that
interest can waver at times. An Active Member who has been returned to the Associate Status may still
continue to ward and display their club logos earned while an Active Member.
